Is It Ethical to Sell My Game Accounts?

July 30th, 2009 by admin

You see them for sale all over the place: Ebay, Craigslist, etc and even on trading and websites especially designed for the trade of items and accounts such as PlayerAuctions.com or MMOBay.net.  I’ll admit I’ve sold accounts in the past without giving it a second thought.  It was how I justified trying a if I didn’t make it into beta – I could just sell the account if I don’t like the or get bored.  Take for example, Age of Conan – I bought the during the pre-release sale that gave me early access (what a joke) and some special in- items.  It turned out the was riddled with bugs in the early days and I decided to scrap it and go find something else, I sold my collector’s edition account for nearly the full amount, recouping most of my money.

Then Darkfall Online came along and I bought a copy of the when copies were hard to come by.  I had full intent to playing the with that copy but due to , I had to sell it before ever even starting an account.  I was surprised to see the prices the accounts were going for, mostly due to how in demand it was.  I quickly turned my $50 into almost $200 over night.  Wow I thought, let’s do that again!  So I took my and bought three more copies of the .  I sold two of the three for another couple hundred bucks a piece and used all the to solve my financial issue AND was still have enough money to keep my last copy and play the !  To me, it made perfect sense and I didn’t feel bad about it at all.  The people who bought the accounts knew they were paying an to secure a copy so they could play too.  It was a win, win situation from how I saw it.

Then, while playing Darkfall I got into discussions with my clanmates on vent and the ethics of selling accounts came up as a topic.  Some of these guys felt very strongly that this was wrong and refused to do it.  My argument to these guys was that they have accounts in ’s that could potentially make them money that they didn’t ever intend to play again.  Their argument was that it was against the EULA for most ’s to buy or sell accounts.  I never really saw it as a problem, considering both parties knew what they were getting.  They were getting a seasoned character and I was getting compensated for my time.

The reason I bring this up is I might just sell my WoW accounts to help make some money to cover my future play in other games that interest me more these days.  I’ve held onto my WoW accounts mostly because I always thought I’d go back in and play with my battleground twinks between other games, but I never really do.  So now that I’m considering selling, I’ve got the question of ethics that keeps bothering me.  Is this right or wrong?  I need to see some opinions from our community.  What do you think about buying or selling accounts in ’s?  I can understand some people’s problems with trading items, but specifically accounts themselves is what I’m looking for opinions on.  Let me know your thoughts.

Karos Online

July 30th, 2009 by admin

A new model is on the horizon – Online.  This is going to be one to watch as it breaks away from the standard model of the genre with really, really and animations.  See the screenshots and the video below to see what I’m talking about.  We here at GameZig will definitely be giving this one a closer look when it opens up – it’s free, why not?

NHN announced today that its first release in Europe will be a new, graphically stunning fantasy called Online. Online is being developed in Korea by Galaxy Gate, a studio founded by the lead developers of Last Chaos, a title released in 2004 which has since found success in Europe. Online (http://www.karosgame.com) is scheduled for release this autumn.

NHN, which has launched several successful titles in Asia through its Hangame portal, is offering this brand new as its premier European title in order to give EU players the chance to feed in on the ’s development from the pre-launch stages. Online is scheduled to release simultaneously in Europe and Korea and will be available to European players for closed beta testing, so that their feedback can be considered early to help tailor the to European tastes and play styles. “Our goal with Online is to provide a gaming experience that players across Europe will enjoy for a long time to come,” said Dongmin Lee, Head of Overseas Business Development at NHN. “Europe is a new market for NHN, and we are focusing our efforts there on offering this fresh title which we feel has a lot of potential. In addition to a great , we know that European players expect a high standard of service, and we are committed to delivering that with Online.”

In Online, players take the role of a hero determined to defeat the curse of darkness falling over the world of Asmara, and ascend to ultimate glory by becoming the mythical warrior. Through questing, guild clashes and mass PvP, they enter the fight for domination over the world’s vital energy source, Fletta. Fletta gems provide the basis for the ’s unique and complex alternate progression system; alongside traditional leveling within the , Fletta energy can be used to increase stats, give buffs, buy resources and enchant items.

With a strong RPG component, wide range of class skills and fantastic visual combat effects, Online offers a rich player experience and an exciting end- for guilds, including castle sieges and resource control points. There are a variety of dynamic dungeons to explore, with shifting paths and surprises to challenge players as they progress in level. The economy is well-developed, with mining, fishing and crafting elements, and a consignment system for storage and an house.

Online offers rare graphical quality for its small client size, and will be accessible to a vast range of computers with minimal requirements. Videos demonstrating graphics and gameplay are now available on the official website at www.karosgame.com, and more features will be revealed as the closed beta test, scheduled to start in mid-August, gets underway.

Online is scheduled to launch in English this autumn, followed by German and Turkish versions. NHN confirms that additional languages are being considered.

Unbound Saga – Going Digital (plus free codes!)

July 30th, 2009 by admin

Ah, the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. John M Richardson Jr once said “When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.” We at Vogster would like to think of ourselves as part of that second camp, The Makers, not to be confused with THE MAKER, the mysterious omniscient entity responsible for the misadventures that plague Rick Ajax and Lori Machete in Unbound Saga for the , available now for download exclusively on the PlayStation Network.

See what I did there? Bridge quotes about the future to a reference to , which then leads to the topic of digital distribution? Yes, Unbound Saga is available for download only. You can’t walk into Gamezoinks, or wherever else you typically buy your disc-based gaming fix, and walk out with a plastic box full of brawling Unbound goodness. You can, however, buy this from the comfort of your own home, while still in your bathrobe and bunny slippers. Click-click-clack, simple as that. Super easy, and all you need is an internet connection and a PlayStation Network account. And a PlayStation device to play the on, of course.

Unbound Saga

But why would Vogster, or any other publisher for that matter, buck the trend and do something as radical as bypassing brick-and-mortar? What do we have against the good people at Gamezoinks? Nothing at all, I assure you (In fact, we just made that name up.). But the benefits of digital distribution cannot be overlooked. For the consumer, digital download offers unparalleled convenience. If you want it, you can have it NOW, regardless of weather, bus schedules, gas prices, etc. RIGHT NOW. In fact, I just bought the first three seasons of Dexter from the PlayStation Store while writing this. My fingers barely left the keyboard. How convenient is THAT?? It also guarantees availability. It would have stunk to drive all the way to the mall for that set of DVDs only to find they were sold out. Well, the internet is never sold out, and it is open 24-7. How ‘bout them apples?

Digital distribution is good for the developer, too. It is easier to get the product onto the market, cheaper to manufacture and distribute, and it bypasses the growing used- and rental- markets that eat into sales. The traditional model makes it that much harder for smaller companies to compete, even those with amazing new ideas and talent. Wouldn’t you rather have more good games to choose from? Going digital gives developers a viable stage to present their products for the gameplaying market to enjoy.

We certainly haven’t turned our back on the tactile satisfaction of holding something groovy and colorful in your hands. That’s why we’re hard at working producing spiffy comics and sweet, sweet action statuettes to adorn your desktops and shrines (Check out our Facebook Fan page some nifty pix.). And as DLC becomes available, you’ll be able to hop into the new content instantly, thanks to the uber-convenience of it all!

So yes, the digital download method is relatively new, and sometimes new can be scary. But you survived the change from 8-bit to HD, from 2D to 3D, from cartridge to CD to DVD to Blu-ray. I think we will not only survive the change from disc to digital, but we’ll all benefit from the process. And if you don’t believe me, here’s a rock-solid offer to try it for yourself: FIVE FREE CODES FOR YOUR OWN COPY OF ! (codes are for North America only — sorry Lost Continent of Atlantis!)

Wait, what? FREE?? You bet, but because downloading digital content to your PSP is so darn easy (signed in from the PlayStation Store, select “Redeem Codes”) , we decided to throw in a little extra challenge just to emphasize how easy the actual process is WITHOUT the silly contest challenge. Here are the codes — all you have to do is guess the missing characters. (And yes, there is a pattern related to this posting…)

Have at it, junior G-men!

Demon’s Souls Pre-order Bonus Expands, Now Also Includes Full Soundtrack

July 30th, 2009 by admin

Demon's Souls screenshot 1

Hey folks, AtlusA.R.A.M. here, and I’ve got some news to share regarding Demon’s Souls, the upcoming action RPG for PLAYSTATION 3.

Now, if you’re unfamiliar with Demon’s Souls, getting up-to-speed should be as easy as checking out the blogs we’re featuring in the official message boards, hitting up the ’s official website, and checking out the great PlayStation Eye chat we had with the incredibly awesome Jeff Rubenstein.

As you may already know, we’re offering fans who pre-order either version of the (Standard or Deluxe, at participating retailers only) a full-color, 40-page art book featuring sketches, designs, and renders that wonderfully show off the ’s gritty medieval aesthetic.  On its own, this is a pretty nice bonus (says the publisher offering it), considering it is being thrown in at no additional cost to the customer, but we’ve recently decided to take things a step further:

Demon's Souls Pre-order

Resist, if you dare.

In addition to the art book, fans who pre-order will now ALSO receive the ’s FULL soundtrack CD.  That’s right, we’re going to throw 24 tracks (about 71 minutes) of music into the pre-order bonus as well.  And if you’ve ever heard the in action, you likely know that the music is haunting, atmospheric, sweeping, and orchestral.  Don’t worry, people who have already pre-ordered: the music disc is secured on the back inside cover of the art book, so you won’t miss out!

So, whether you reserve (at participating retailers) the Standard edition of the , which would net you the , art book, and soundtrack CD, or whether you upgrade to the Deluxe edition, which gets you the , a 150+ page strategy guide, a collectible slip case, the ’s complete musical score, and a premium art book, you’re going to be getting a heck of a deal.

Demon's Souls Strategy Guide Sample

Sample from Official Demon’s Souls Strategy Guide

Of course, these extras are in addition to all the changes and enhancements coming to the North American release of the gaming, such as:

  • All-new North American cover art
  • All-new North American online servers (which ensures a level playing field for newcomers)
  • An improved localization, which addresses many grammar/inaccuracy issues from the overseas version

Join us, won’t you, as we venture into the Kingdom of Boletaria on October 6th, 2009.  It’s going to be a tough battle to deliver the realm from evil, but hey, at least you’ll have a ton of free swag to comfort yourself if you happen to reserve your copy today.

Until next time, friends.

Ratchet & Clank Comic-Con Recap (with Videos!)

July 30th, 2009 by admin

Comic-Con was huge for Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. On Wednesday night, we revealed the winner of the Captain Qwark’s My Blaster Runs Hot contest, the Spiral of Death, and showed footage of the weapon in the . We also let the press try their hand at the new time puzzles that Clank will have to complete.

Throughout the course of the show, attendees could check out the Krell Canyon demo at the PlayStation booth. There were also photo opportunities with Ratchet himself, as well as swag: an inflatable replica of Ratchet’s Omniwrench 2000.

All of this built up to Sunday, when we revealed all of this and much more to the public in our panel session. Creative Director Brian Allgeier, Project Manager Bryan Bernal, and Writer Todd Fixman were joined by voice actors James Arnold Taylor (Ratchet), Armin Shimerman (Dr. Nefarious), and Joey D’Auria (Allister Azimuth). The panel was moderated by Gamespot Editor-In-Chief Ricardo Torres.

We led off with some exclusive videos that those of you playing at home won’t be able to see until the final releases, one involving Captain Qwark, and the other an unlockable video about the Agorian Warriors. Allgeier and company then discussed the story, and its theme of “throwing caution to the wind,” especially relating to the effect of Ratchet being with an older Lombax for the first time. One of the early highlights involved a verbal spar between Taylor and Shimerman, using the voices of Ratchet and Dr. Nefarious, respectively, as they sat together on stage talk about Nefarious’s temperament issues.

Discussion then turned to Clank and his whereabouts after being kidnapped at the end of Tools of Destruction. Bernal revealed that Clank is being held at the center of the universe (give or take fifty feet), in a secret facility known as the Great Clock. Clank gains new time abilities and has some brand new indie-inspired time gameplay.

For more about Clank and the first footage of his gameplay, check out this video:

Next came a topic that is a series standby: weapons. The beginning of the discussion centered on the Weapons Contest that occurred on Wednesday evening. The Spiral of Death was revisited and shown in case attendees hadn’t seen it. Winning fan designer Jackson Finley was recognized by Bernal, and the crowd gave him a huge round of applause. If you haven’t seen the Spiral of Death in action, check this video out:

Torres then moved onto the world reveal of a brand new line of weapons for A Crack in Time, The Constructo weapons. Brian Allgeier discussed how fans really enjoyed the ability to specifically tailor weapons to their own playing-style with modifications in Deadlocked and Up Your Arsenal. He announced two new weapons, the Constructo Pistol and Constructo Bomb Glove, and revealed some mods that longtime series fans will love – the video below shows and explains more.

The voice actors discussed their work on the and how much fun they have had working with these characters over the years. James Arnold Taylor discussed how Ratchet’s voice is really his voice, and as such it’s really one of his easiest characters to jump into (which he did repeatedly throughout the panel). He also mentioned that it was only during this past year that he met David Kaye, the actor who voices Clank, as voice actors typically record their sessions separately.

Armin Shimerman told attendees he generally has to take the next day off after recording Nefarious due to the amount of screaming a session involves, especially due to his perception of Nefarious screaming a lot more in this . However, this didn’t dissuade him from screaming for the audience, including the classic yelling at his butler, “LAAAAAAAAWREEEEEENCE.” Newcomer to the franchise Joey D’Auria discussed voicing the first new male Lombax in the series, and how much he’s learned from the other voice actors, particularly Taylor. He also discussed how Azimuth’s character arc and how impressed he has been with the evolution of gaming as a storytelling medium.

We recently announced that we were partnering with DC Direct to bring fans the first Ratchet & Clank action figures. These long-awaited figures, including Ratchet, Clank, Nefarious and Qwark, were brought on stage to give fans a chance to see them before their release on December 2nd.

Before the Q&A, attendees were treated to the world premiere of the brand new trailer for the , which you can watch below. The trailer includes the first glimpse at a new level in the , Axiom City.

Finally, the group then took some fan questions. Highlights included a young fan who asked about the RYNO. Before anyone on the panel could answer, the fan proceeded to remind the panel of what each RYNO from each did to crowd laughter and applause. Allgeier confirmed the RYNO as well as the Tools of Destruction fan-favorite, the Groovitron, will return in A Crack in Time. A fan asked if multiplayer would be included, to which Allgeier said the team was focused on closing the story arc started in Tools of Destruction and Quest For Booty while creating an epic single-player experience (also bringing applause). Another fan asked if The Plumber would return, to which Fixman revealed that he indeed would.

Everyone on the panel had a fantastic time. We here at Insomniac want to send a big thank you to all of our fans who came to see us and asked questions and came up afterwards to chat with us, ask for autographs, and take photos. We also want to send out a big thank you to James, Armin and Joey for taking the time to participate and see their fans. A huge thank you goes out to Ricardo Torres for moderating the panel, as well. We also are grateful to everyone at Comic-Con for giving us the opportunity and space to present new features and video directly to our fans. Finally, we want to thank everyone at Sony Computer Entertainment who helped put this together, including all of our PR/Marketing folks as well as all of the folks who helped us out on the floor when trying to hand out thousands of inflatable wrenches.

That’s all for now – we hope you enjoyed this recap of the panel and the videos. Next up for us is GamesCom in Cologne, Germany, where we will reveal a bunch more new stuff, including the first look at our Space gameplay.

We’ll try to answer your questions in the comments – but as I’m writing this from a plane, Bryan Intihar may chime in as well.

Thanks for all your support! It was great to see so many of you at -Con!

Review of Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes

star 4 Review of Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes

–>

4 out of 5

In some cases, all six characters might be on the screen at the same time.
In some cases, all six characters might be on the screen at the same time.

The 2009 digital re-release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a no-nonsense version of a beloved fighting . It’s the same you may have played in arcades or on the Dreamcast back in 2000, but now it has online play. Nicely functional online play, I might add. Also, it sidesteps all of the character-unlocking steps you had to take in previous versions of the by giving you everything there is to get, right off the bat. It doesn’t redraw the graphics and it doesn’t rebalance the gameplay. If you love Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and you want to play it online, this is a good value at $15.00.

Of course, if you’re not already familiar with the , you’ll probably want to know a bit more about this Marvel and Capcom thing. As the name indicates, this brings together characters from the Marvel Comics universe and characters from Capcom’s lengthy history in the world of video gaming. This 2D fighter is a three-on-three tag battle that follows in the footsteps of Capcom’s previous Versus games. The Versus games are differentiated from the company’s other 2D fighters by being… totally crazy. While it starts with the basics of Street Fighter at its core, it quickly goes off the rails in ways you may find amazing or totally baffling. Stoic, measured Ryu can now throw fireballs as tall as he is, and he can throw them in the air. In fact, most moves can be done in the air, and everyone can jump something like twice the height of the screen.

The super moves are ridiculous, screen-filling maneuvers that can be chained together with the other characters in your party. Combos numbering in the hundreds are fairly common, and combos numbering in the thousands are certainly possible, too. It’s kind of a lot to take in, and if you aren’t up on it, the can get a little overwhelming. Heck, even the character select screen can be hard to deal with when you’re first getting started. With 56 characters to choose from, you’ll have plenty of dudes to sift through as you figure out your ideal team. But let me be clear: this might contain too much crazy to be any fun for players who aren’t already into it. At the very least, new players should strive to find other groups of new players to fight against, because playing against seasoned players only results in frustration of the “well I’m just going to set my controller down while you finish this combo” variety.

She's a member of STARS!
She’s a member of STARS!

As far as modes go, it has the standard arcade mode and a training mode, but multiplayer is, of course, where you’ll find the real action. You can play ranked one-on-one matches or unranked games that hold up to six players, who rotate through as matches finish while the non-active players spectate. The online seems to be of the same quality as Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix’s, which is to say that it’s great and seems to work perfectly more often than not. Of course, this is the Internet we’re talking about here, so don’t be surprised to see some less-than-ideal matches here and there.

The graphics in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 haven’t been updated, but there are a few sprite-filtering options to choose from. Additionally, the defaults to a zoomed-in perspective that fills 16:9 screens. The original ran in 4:3, and if you like, you can force it to that aspect ratio. Considering the verticality of MvC2, I think I prefer the original screen size, but that’s more a matter of preference. It’s a nice option to have, either way. It’s also worth noting that the music in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is awful. Actually, I appreciate its awfulness in some cases, like the character select screen’s short loop that repeats that it’s going to “take you for a ride.” But most of the tracks are pseudo-jazzy tunes that really don’t fit with the action very well at all.

So if you’re a fan of the , you’ve probably already purchased it. But if you haven’t gotten into a previous version of MvC2, it’s going to be a steep climb, especially if you hope to compete online. As someone who understands the basics of the but doesn’t always apply them in the most intelligent way, I was getting absolutely stomped in most of the ranked games I played. Don’t expect to be able to take any skills you’ve picked up in other recent fighting games, like Street Fighter IV or BlazBlue, and apply them here to any great effect. Yes, you’re still making fireball and dragon punch motions for specials, but the mentality is certainly different. You may want to check out the demo first.

The King of Fighters XII Ignites Your PS3 this Week

July 28th, 2009 by admin

Greetings and salutations, PlayStation Blog readers!

The fighting gurus at SNK PLAYMORE have finally put the finishing touches on the PLAYSTATION 3 release of The King of Fighters XII, the long-awaited next-generation rebirth of this revered arcade fighting franchise. The will be available at retail tomorrow, July 28th, and we here at Ignition Entertainment are thrilled to help bring this all-new hand-drawn 2D fighter to the North American market first. That’s right; U.S. gamers will get their hands on the before their counterparts in Asia and Europe…so early adopters can train for a few days to hone their skills before facing online challengers from KOF’s Japanese homeland.

KOF XII Screenshot 2

Series veterans likely already know the franchise’s unique history—back in 1994, characters from classic Neo Geo series including Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and Ikari Warriors were brought together to create a unique and revolutionary three-on-three fighting known simply as The King of Fighters ’94. For the next decade, KOF reigned as one of the most beloved fighting franchises ever, with annual updates satiating fans’ desires for updated rosters and gameplay evolution. But in 2004, KOF mysteriously went on hiatus and fans knew SNK PLAYMORE had to be planning a massive overhaul for the venerated fighting series. It’s now been nearly half a decade since The King of Fighters was last seen, and arrives just in time to celebrate the franchise’s 15th anniversary.

King of Fighters XII has taken the next evolutionary step with radically reworked gameplay, glorious high-resolution 2D graphics, and silky smooth animation. SNK PLAYMORE has spared no effort lovingly hand crafting each of the 22 characters to forge the most gorgeous 2D fighting ever seen, coupled with a selection of lively, intricately detailed stages spanning the globe. The idea that 2D sprite graphics that could be compared to animated films was once an inconceivable dream, but that promise has been fulfilled with KOF XII’s fluidly moving fighters.

pugilists looking for a single-player experience can challenge the traditional Arcade Mode, change focus with the Time Attack Mode, or even unlock a wealth of attractive artwork in the Gallery. But as usual, the truly shines in a Versus setting—grab a buddy, plug in a second controller (or even better, a joystick), and watch the hours melt away (and the thumb blisters build). You can also battle head to head via the Playstation Network to engage players online all over the world. With 8-player online lobbies, KOF XII simulates the arcade experience of days long past—prospective fighters can be spectators during other players’ fights and then “quarter up” and play the winner.

KOF XII players can also experience the revolutionary, PLAYSTATION 3-exclusive Clan Mode, a unique feature that allows players with a common goal to band together as a members-only club in order to create the most dominant online Clan possible. You’ll be able to send out a Clan newsletter, kick out members who aren’t carrying their weight, and challenge other Clans to move up the international Clan leaderboard. players will also be able to download an exclusive theme featuring sultry female fighters Elizabeth and Mature, and should look forward to a slew of upcoming downloadable content that will be made available on . And don’t forget about full Playstation 3 Trophy support, allowing players to be rewarded for their skill and to flaunt their accolades as true badges of honor.

KOF XII Screenshot 1

Don’t miss out. History is being made and you can be a part of it with – the ultimate fighting for the ultimate fighting fan.

And as a little gift from us at Ignition, we’ve got some Mercury Meltdown vouchers to give away. Keep an eye out on the Sony PlayStation Twitter feed today at 3PM Pacific for deets.
